We were both pleased to see (perhaps Mum was less so?) that the RDs had scaled down the grown-up obstacles for the kids, but kept the challenge and spirit intact. They missed out the immersion water obstacles, but not the mud!
My son had opted to run the course by himself (an option for those 8 and above) but I joined him for the second half - from the start they scaled haybale hurdles then crawled under a rope, ran to some monkey bars, ran to plastic tunnel crawls, across to a rope swing, through a pond then out through some mud which he was delighted to find was waist-deep. Over more hay bales then into a junior sack-race and through a Charlotte’s Web.
From here there was a “Green 100m” (to replicate the “Green Mile”) leading to a concrete cinder block drag, under a wall then over some tyres and up the hill to more tunnels. This time they climbed over them, not through them and the legs were definitely tiring!
Next up was a wall climb – learning the heel-hook technique is now on his to-do list - then back to the mud to crawl under barbed wire. With a sprint to the finish hay bales he had earned his own dog tags!
These were both brilliant races, but the Rock Solid experience doesn’t end there: As well as the after-party, they are also famous for offering hot showers - these were extremely welcome in Milton Keynes, but March’s balmy sunshine meant I didn’t sample Exeter’s ones.
This was a great race, challenging terrain with - well – rock solid obstacles. The marking problems on Saturday had been fixed for Sunday, when Team Muddy Race were out in force again!
