I’m already an OCR addict and have only been doing it a year. Nuclear Race is my last for 2014 and what a way to end the year. Nuclear Race describes their event as a ‘beast’ and if you don’t train hard “it will bite you”, let me tell you this is no exaggeration. Here’s my muddy journey!

I loved all the obstacles and especially how tough it was. It pushed me in every way possible, with gummy bears half way round and the gin shot at the end going down a treat

The Nuclear team are friendly and always happy to help - I want to make a special mention of the Nuclear Race team who made me feel part of the team early on, replying to my tweets and joining in on my Facebook conversations.

Next Level Mud

The Nuclear Race strap line is ‘love mud’ and it’s easy to see why. Whilst I’ve encountered mud in all my OCR runs never have they been on the same scale as this. When I signed up I opted for the 8km; new to this I thought it would be plenty but the closer it got the more I wished I’d attempted 16km. That said, this was by far one of the toughest races I’ve competed in and 8km was plenty. Starting off in the rain, a first for me, the first few obstacles were the usual, ditches, walls and tyres.

Winding myself on the first attempt at a mud trench, I slipped, landing straight on my chest and had to sit down for 5 mins. Second attempt was much better and I managed to get up attacking it in a different way.
The next 20 mins was spent dangling people by their ankles in the hope of helping others up! Good fun!
After that was a group of 4-5 obstacles all grouped together and all water related.

Aquaphobia - what can I say - slippery and scary! There wasn’t a person in sight who made it across the lily pads in one go. This just meant we were already wet in preparation for the tyre wall in the middle of a lake. The zip wire is new to me and was fun, even if the water was cold. The slide is the scariest I’ve been down, flying off at the end and totally submersed in the muddy water.

The death slide is the scariest I’ve been down, flying off at the end and totally submersed in the muddy water

About 2.5km from the end came rope climbs. I say climb’s’ because it was a huge zig zag of rope climbs up and down! They were high, slippery and very muddy. When looking back the Firemans Pole caused some trouble! What a girl! After about 10 minutes of messing around I got my act together and went down, greeted by applause from the watching crowd.

This race threw everything at you, tubes, balance beams, potatoes, trenches galore, zip wires, slides, swamps and it was constant.
The mud - imagine mud and times it by a 100, then times that by a 100 and you might get close.

I loved all the obstacles and I especially how tough it was and how much it pushed me in every way possible, the gummy bears half way round were genius and the gin shot at the end went down a treat.

Finishing on a special shout out to the Marshall’s, they were amazing, full of energy despite the rain and really motivating. Well done Nuclear Races you pulled it out the bag!

Nuclear Races next event is on May 16th 2015 which is also in our South Season Pass which you can get here for £129 with two other events.
