On one of the mildest November days on record, Monster Race held its winter event in the stunning country estate, Charlton Park, Wiltshire. The warm up was delivered by a very enthusiastic MC, encouraging very innovative and fun partner warm up exercises which left everybody smiling and hyped for the big event.

Before the race even began runners had to crawl under slated wood through thick mud, ready for all runners to get in the mood for what was ahead

Choose your distance…

Runners had the choice of 5k or 10k. The 10k was two laps of the 5k course meaning we had to face each obstacle twice! However we were pre warned that the distance was slightly further than the advertised 10k.

The number of obstacles per lap was approx 30 here is our top 10 highlights

1. Mud Marsh

Approx 2k into the course runners were faced with the exhausting crawl through thick glorious, shoe sucking mud whilst trudging under a barbed wire contraption.

2. Streams

If that was not tiring on the legs enough after the mud marsh there was the chance to wash off the excess weight of the mud off our shoes by running through a rocky stream which varied from shoe to waist depth.

3. Leaning walls

Huge A frames & high walls to scramble over spread out throughout the course.

4. Log carry

Grab a tree stump and run up a short hill? Seems like a sensible thing to do! No problem.

5. Tank traps

Designed to slow down runners as effectively as tanks, here was a chance to either hop through like a pro or bash your shin and clumsily climb your way through.

6. Sandbag Slog

oh yes, another heavy object to carry up a hill, great! It seems the technique here was to try to find a sandbag, carry it upside down and hope it empties on the way. What? No, that doesn’t count as cheating!

7. Lake wade/Water slide

4k/8k into the course runners were wading through refreshingly cold water up to neck height before launching themselves down a slide and being told to smile for the camera!

8. Uphill tyre crawl

After the relaxing slide it was back onto the belly to crawl beneath a narrow tyre structure and earn a facefull of mud!

9. Weight pulley

For the less experienced runners this was a challenge as some runners techniques were amusing to say the least!

10. Tyre mangle

After all the exhausting obstacles this one was by far the most difficult. Right before crossing the finish line runners had to squeeze their bodies through a tyre sandwich, emerging feeling reborn at the finish line!

It was tiring, it was brutal and it left us battered and bruised but most of all it was worth it. You know why? Look at that medal!
