We caught up with Doug from Dirty Dozen Races to ask him a few questions about their first obstacle race in Kent later this year..
What’s your background an how did you get into Obstacle Races?
I played competitive rugby and then got into climbing and skiing. I did Tough Guy a few years ago and have never looked back.
What kind of obstacles will there be? What should we all expect?
We are keeping our obstacles under wraps for now but all will be big and all will be of military style. To give you a flavour, there will be the ones you expect from the big organisers such as 10ft walls, high scramble nets and some electrocutions plus a few surprises such as ‘eye of the needle’, ‘the camel’s back’ and ‘the hurtles’.
How long have you been planning it?
We started planning for this event in August 2012
What inspired you to do it?
I was always slightly disappointed by the races I entered – and thought that the obstacles should be bigger and better than they were (with the exception of Tough Guy!), and the organisers should have offered a better overall experience than they did. So the only way to rectify this was to start my own event.
What’s the venue like?
Wet and muddy! On top of the 20 awesome military style obstacles, there is a swamp, river crossings and a tank arena.
Do you compete in any other races?
Yes, I’ve done Tough Guy, Tough Mudder, Spartan, Grim, Grim Duathlon and Hell Runner. I love obstacle racing and will be looking to do a lot more in 2014 (I’ve dedicated the rest of this year to making sure our first event is a blowout success).
Why should everyone sign up?
People should sign up for the ‘Dirty Dozen’ to experience obstacle racing at the highest level. Everything from the course, to the obstacles down to the event village has been planned to create the best possible obstacle race.
How is it different to any others?
It’s different in a number of ways. Firstly you chose if it’s a race or not. If you want to take your time and just enjoy the event, that’s fine with us but for those that want to race, then the timing chips that we provide all our Dirty Dozen Racers will allow us to track them and provide results. We intend to roll out a league system for 2014 and an invitational race for the top Dirty Dozen Racers to enter.
We have all inclusive pricing. Our advertised prices include everything (registration fees, VAT, insurance and credit card fees) plus its free to park and spectate.
We’ll be offering military style obstacles over 3 different lengths of course:
The ‘Dirty Half Dozen’ – 6k + 15 military style obstacles
The ‘Dirty Dozen’ – 12k + 20 military style obstacles
The ‘Dirty Dozen and a Half’ – 18k + 25 military style obstacles
All our obstacles are military style. You won’t find any ‘filler’ obstacles at Dirty Dozen Races. Each obstacle is strategically located and built to test participants to the max.
Enter as an individual or team. All Dirty Dozen Races obstacles can be done as an individual or as a team (how easy people will find it to complete our obstacles will depend on them)
Check out Dirty Dozen Races here which is set for October 19th in Kent later this year.
