Thetford Trail 10K takes place in the beautiful trails of Thetford Forest in Norfolk and is run by Inspire Races.
The summer series is a series of 3 races in May, June & July and the winter series is a series of 3 races in December, January and February. Each race typically attracts just over 400 entries in each race.
For those of you with dogs, there’s also a chance to share the experience with a 10km Canicross race which starts 30 minutes after the main race.
How To Get There & Where To Park
I found when I put High Lodge, Thetford Forest into Apple Maps it took me to a random part of the forest and not the entrance I needed. The 2nd time I put Go Ape into the Apple Maps it took me to correct entrance on Thetford Road.
The entrance is obvious when you find it as you see the big signs for Go Ape and other events taking place at the venue. Once you drive down the long entrance your need to take a ticket for the barrier to lift. There is plenty of parking, the hardest part is remembering where you parked as it a very large car park, but each section is named to help you.
When you enter the race you will be given a code on your entry confirmation to reduce your parking to £5 for all-day parking. Make sure you have this code to hand as the 1st time I raced here I forgot and paid nearly £15.
The race starts after a mass warm-up lead by a local fitness instructor with some high tempo tunes to get you race ready.
The course is a mostly flat trail paths (see photo below) but does have some grassy and off-road sections but with less than 15 turns it makes it a quick and easy course to follow.
The first 2 miles seemed to have a slight decline elevation, before increasing slightly and then flattening out until you get to the final straight which is a really long but small incline just to make it that little bit more challenging as your legs get tired.
There aren’t many places for family and friends to spectate without going into the forest but the best place is on the finishing straight.
Results & Photos
The race is a chip timed race and Results are provided by Chip Timing UK and can be found on there results page HERE. It also includes a 5K split time which is quite useful.
There also several photographers on the course at the start, around the course and at the finish. You can buy your race photos for £2 using the link provided in the results email to Geo Snapshot.
Medals & Trophies
The medal is wooden which makes a change from the usual plastic medals you get in most events and keeps with the theme of running in the forest.
Trophies are presented to the first 3 males and females after the race.
Coffee & Cake
High Lodge has its own large Cafe near the car park which has a large range of hot and cold drinks, hot food and cakes but be warned it does get busy due to the volume of people using the forest facilities.
There is also a small independent coffee tuk-tuk type van at the start and finish of the course.
The 2nd time we made a short drive into Thetford and used a coffee shop in the town centre.
This is a great race series that is well organised and allows you to experience the long winding trails of Thetford Forest with its tall pines and friendly atmosphere.
I also liked the fact you could wear Headphones and it is a plastic-free event.
