This was my 4th OCR event, and the first time I’ve tried to run it competitively, so maybe some of the “fun” got lost on me? Generally, it was very well run, the marshalls were great, loved the “warm-up” girl (she was mental!) & the venue brilliant. The 10km course I think was more 11km, but that’s not a bad thing. The trail route was good and incorporated a few nasty hills, some woodlands, some open fields, some nettles, enough mud to keep you happy (but none of the “sink-up-to-your-hips” mud that other events offer). The obstacles were all really good. I down-scored them purely because there were no “tough” obstacles – no Rig, no monkey bars, no high walls, etc. In a military fitness event I expected something to be a little harder, but instead they’ve catered for the masses, so that just about everyone CAN make it round, which is no bad thing I suppose. That said, the Marine zone was pretty horrible (dunking your head into cold water is unpleasant), though the slide was pretty fun! The medal and t-shirt were good at the end as was the goody bag, free porridge, etc. All in all, a good event, but probably more suited to the beginner OCR entrants looking for a fair event that they can get round in a small group… or a good runner looking for a fast time and some championship points!

  2. Mud

This event is definitely a “run” more than an obstacle event. I did the longer route which was actually 12k not 10k!! Good terrain, lots of hills and natural obstacles. Loads of motivation around the course and variation in obstacles.
The big let down this year was the long wait for obstacles – as the long and short route merge together there were lots of bottle necks and I ended up with over 30 minute wait for the water slides and then 60 minutes for the last obstacle!! Some people just went round them therefore timing and placements were all nonsense!!

If they can improve this then it is a really good event and one for the mud runners!!
